UWC LIBRARY

CAPE TOWN  | WESTERN CAPE

UWC library is a shared space and an area of study for the entire UWC Campus. The proposed lighting upgrade to the library kicked off 3 years ago when we conducted a survey to replace all existing fluorescent-type lights with energy-efficient LED's. Due to Covid-19, the project was put on hold with phase 1 completed in January 2022. Some of the challenges faced were to reuse existing apertures on site so it was a complete retrofit.
The main fitting throughout the library was a continuous Linear T8 fluorescent. This was replaced with a 6m continuous Linear Maxi with an integrated sensor to not only detect movement but daylight harvesting as well. The current system installation went from 76W/m fluorescents to 36W/m LED increasing the lux levels dramatically. An emergency battery backup system was also incorporated into the Linear.

Being a retrofit project, all downlighters with existing apertures needed to be replaced with LED's. The Nemo 15W recessed round downlight white was used to replace the existing 18W fluorescent type fitting. Luxon 300x1200 36W Prism was selected for the flicker-free feature and the low UGR rating for all the passage areas. Surface-mounted downlighters were replaced with Canolux 150 surface 40º white 27W. The existing staircase lighting was replaced with Solo 15W bulkhead opal diffuser white, complete with emergency kit.
