ST MARY'S SCHOOL WAVERLEY
JOHANNESBURG | GAUTENG
The building is on the St Mary’s school grounds and interestingly, the design chosen by the architect is very modern and in direct contrast to the early to mid-20th century buildings. The lighting needed to match the very modern design theme. The Malta "family" of lights was specified and included the post top, bollard, and wall lights. The light source of these fittings is not directly visible and therefore the light effect is diffused with very little glare, but still achieving good light levels. Blade lights, which ‘throw’ a narrow 180° beam, effectively light up the curved auditorium windows.
Most of the soffit finishes are off-shutter concrete so the positioning of the lights was critical as the lights had to cover the power points. The open-covered walkways are lit with Linear Mini fittings, and Linear Arc 27 was installed against the soffits over the curved staircases. The Linear Arc had to be used as the light had to follow the curve of the staircases. The bathrooms are illuminated with Niche fittings mounted directly onto the concrete soffits.
To continue the diffused light effect Linear Mini, Dega, and Linear LED Cove lights were used in the auditoriums and the very large high-ceiling classrooms. The classrooms are effectively lit with soft and diffused lighting, and the narrow beam Dega gives focused light on the work areas. This was a complex light installation and D&R Electrical Contractors asked Regent to assist with the installation.
