MALL OF AFRICA
MIDRAND | GAUTENG
The Mall of Africa in Midrand is close to 130,000m² GLA, it is South Africa's largest single-phase shopping centre to be built in the country. The design process was led by MDS Architecture to fulfil the client's desire to provide not just a mall in Africa but 'the' Mall in Africa. The design inspiration for the mall and the courts were drawn from the geological beauty of the continent of Africa. This formed the direction of the design and the inspiration for the mall interior. Aesthetics and finishes were developed on this concept in a non-stylized manner.
The brief for the interior lighting was to use Linear Maxi's in a different style to what had been used previously. The Linear Maxi with an up and down light element was suspended in a staggered arrangement creating a unique design. The Linear Maxi's and Elux downlighters were combined, providing lighting and animation to the key centralised areas. The design enabled natural light to be maximised in the Mall, to optimise the shopper's comfort.
The exterior lighting of the mall consisted of various elements: The Istria was used to highlight the facades, the Piazza Post Top angled at 15° to light up the parking areas, and the Quattro Urban Light element for general lighting. In addition, the landscaped areas were lit up using the Europa Post Top single and double and bespoke Linear lights were recessed into the concrete benches. The landscape design of the Waterfall Precinct integrates the surrounding urban street fabric with the Mall of Africa as well as the newly constructed central park. The design aims to provide a pleasant, inviting and sustainable space for the enjoyment of all visiting the Mall of Africa.
