NELSON MANDELA CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL

JOHANNESBURG | GAUTENG

Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital was developed with landscape architecture as a large contributing factor in the design. Spaces that were designed for occupational therapy and children’s play encouraging the use of outdoor spaces as part of recovery. RLS supplied a combination of lighting elements that added to the overall aesthetic design style envisioned by GREENinc Landscape Architects.

The various hospital functions are arranged around 5 internal landscaped courtyards. The courtyards are grouped into Active and Passive Healing Courtyards with each design determined by its relationship with the surrounding hospital function.
The Arrival Court, Visitor and Children’s Garden are welcoming spaces that overlook a circular pond, connected to the children’s garden with a narrow water channel shaded by a Pergola. The Pergola is lit with the Sputnik Trunion mounted 30W 3000K. The surrounding barrier walls in the courtyard feature the Lotis.
The active and passive courtyard gardens feature the Piazza Bollard 9W 4000K and Pathway LED as well as the Sputnik to accentuate walkways, trees and playsets.
