HOUGHTON HOTEL
HOUGHTON ESTATE | JOHANNESBURG
The Houghton Hotel is a lifestyle destination in Johannesburg, showcasing unique architecture and a beautiful outdoor space overlooking the Houghton golf course. The lighting reflects this image of a warm, atmospheric mood in the exterior spaces. This was achieved by using low-glare fittings that were kept to low levels and vertical elements, focusing on specially designed visual cues throughout the architecture and curating the views, enhancing the overall experience through lighting.
ENTRANCE PORTE COCHERE:
The entrance Porte cochere for the hotel has two entrances that require brighter illumination, and a luminaire was needed that would announce the entrance areas to the lobby and parking. The concrete soffit in the Porte Cochere is quite high, and a more layered and intimate area was required. Downlighting these areas would have been the solution, but the risks of glare would be great and the intimacy required would not be achieved. Bringing the light down in order to make the area brighter than the surroundings was more efficient, and a bespoke fitting unique to the hotel was manufactured. The architect created a metal curtain wall with rectangular sections suspended from steel cables, done in a signature colour scheme for the hotel. A pendant was proposed using the same sort of rectangular form, powder coated the same colour to the curtain wall beyond.
POOL AREA:
GreenINK landscape architects designed a tree made from steel cables to act as a trellis for plants to grow over, creating cover over the pool bar seating area, which would also operate at night. With no ceilings, no walls, and no place for standing lamps due to public circulation, the light had to come from the top.
A playful lighting element that would be waterproof and lightweight enough to be suspended from the steel cables was created. Bespoke fittings similar to the entrance feature lights were utilized. The fitting projects light downwards without creating glare, but it also provides a subtle glow effect because a diffuse element was added.
LANDSCAPE LIGHTING:
A big problem with landscape lighting is the high levels of contrast, especially in a hotel and apartment environment where you want to keep the light levels quite low to avoid disturbing guests that look down onto the gardens.
The short shrubs and creepers didn’t provide an opportunity to create areas with vertical lighting to assist with reducing contrast and glare.
A light fitting was needed that could give soft light and ambient build with the condition that it needed to be visible from all sides and not project into the apartments above. A bespoke sphere post top was supplied, which is a bit playful as the landscape is really organic.
